We have seen how the outbreak of the Coronavirus affected our lives. Not just normal people but, tech giants like Google had to cancel their biggest event I/O 2020 due to the Coronavirus pandemic. There are also some events that happened online, which were supposed to happen physically. No doubt, there is a huge loss, as production is also affected. The occurrence of huge events is also affected. Semiconductor producers, TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) were scheduled to start their produce of 3nm by the end of 2020. But Coronavirus has something else planned for them. The TSMC 3nm trial phases of the production are therefore delayed its production to early 2021. This paves way for Samsung as it hopes to become the world’s largest chipmaker in the meantime.
But there is a relief for TSMC. As stated by one of their spokespeople they are focusing on the production of 7nm and 5nm processes. The company also stated that it has high pressure and various deadlines are approaching. The biggest order to the company is by Huawei. It is assumed that TSMC 3nm production delayed from Q4 of 2020 to Q1 of 2021.
The company is investing a lot of resources on the 3nm project. Simultaneously, Samsung is also working on the 3nm project. They have switched their focus from 5nm to 14nm, 10nm, and 7nm fabs along with 3nm. This delay of TSMC may, however, may give a boost to Samsung and they may catch up TSMC soon in production of 3nm. Samsung wants to give a tough competition TSMC because it currently it is the largest producer of 5nm fabs. TSMC has clients globally including Apple, HiSilicon, AMD, Qualcomm, etc. Samsung has however announced the delay of 3nm production. They may release it by 2022. They are currently working on 7nm fabs.
